Communications and MEL Officer

BACKGROUND:

The USAID Tourism Resilience, Innovation and Promotion Activity (TRIP) aims to improve Jordan’s tourism sector, primarily through supporting the Jordan Tourism Board’s (JTB’s) efforts to strategically position and promote Jordan as a distinctive destination. Further, the TRIP will increase domestic and international tourism to primary and secondary sites, boosting the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and enabling economic growth and job creation across the tourism value chain. TRIP will achieve its objectives in close coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA) and local and international partners. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Communications and MEL Officer reports to the Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Lead. The Communications and MEL Officer assists the Communications Department in supporting the USAID Tourism Resilience, Innovation and Promotion (TRIP) Activity through creating accurate, effective and timely reports and communications materials in Arabic and English to support the project’s aims and objectives.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communications Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in drafting communications materials including press releases, newsletters, factsheets, brochures, success stories, social media posts, progress reports, action memos, briefing documents, talking points, correspondence, and other materials, ensuring proper spelling and grammar in both English and Arabic.
  • Translate English materials into Arabic, edit and proofread.
  • Draft project announcements and news articles on key developments.
  • Aid in preparing oral and written briefings for other staff members for external events.
  • Maintain a database of media organizations; develop and maintain working relationships with journalists in multiple types of media outlets.
  • Communicate with media to address project news, attend events and ensure coverage in news outlets.
  • Monitor media alerts and relevant publications for USAID TRIP and tourism news.
  • Help manage USAID TRIP’s social media communications; help create interactive social media content and campaigns.
  • Assist in designing, planning and implementing communication plans and strategies; create timely reports for all communication campaigns.
  • Ensure all content complies with USAID standards and style guides.
  • Manage USAID TRIP outreach materials to ensure they are up-to-date and accessible to interagency staff, USAID Headquarters, and local press.
  • Attend external events as needed, ensuring proper USAID branding, and marking, availability of background materials, and occasionally serving as photographer/videographer.
  • Manage electronic and hard copy filing systems for communications materials.

MEL Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in collecting complete, valid, accurate, and timely qualitative and quantitative data for regular monitoring and reporting.
  • Perform data entry, cleaning, and visualization in the M&E databases.
  • Support in the planning, implementation and reporting on USAID TRIP’s learning activities.
  • Help prepare, consolidate, and review monitoring reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field.

Experience:

  • Three to five years of proven Communications experience is required. MEL experience is a plus.
  • Proven excellent working relationship with local media.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in Arabic; able to fluently write, translate from English, edit and proofread.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills in English.
  • Proficient in MS Office and various social media applications.
  • Knowledge of social media strategies and best industry practices.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Creative, innovative, and detail oriented.
  • A capable organizer, used to meeting deadlines.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working on a donor funded project is strongly preferred.
  • Graphic design, photography, and video skills are highly preferred.
