Brief about the project

The regional project „Social Protection for Women in the MENA region” implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aims to enhance the gender-equitable design of social protection systems in selected partner countries in the MENA region. It promotes regional collaboration to advance the access of women to social protection systems, with a specific focus on social insurance coverage for women working in the informal economy.

The project works in three key areas:

  • It sensitizes state actors in the region to the need to design gender-responsive and gender-transformative approaches in social protection. It also helps to make policy evidence-based. To do this, it analyzes what social protection needs women have and what barriers make it difficult for them to access social protection in the respective partner countries.
  • It promotes regional exchange between cooperating countries to discuss challenges and jointly develop innovative ideas how to promote access to social protection for women via so-called “Innovation Labs”. Country teams, consisting of decision makers and key actors from politics, business, science and civil society, develop and pilot innovative solutions and mutually advise each other in a peer-to-peer approach.
  • The project also supports intermediary organizations and enables them to educate women about their right to social protection and and facilitate access to existing social protection programmes.

The project cooperates with regional and international partners, such as the International Social Security Association (ISSA), the Arab Women Organization (AWO), UN Women, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) and the Union for the Mediterranean ( UfM).
