  1. BACKGROUND

The Recycling in Jordan Activity (JRA) is a 5-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by Chemonics International.  The activity seeks to increase commercial sector utilization of recycling services in Amman, utilizing a market systems approach. JRA will work with private recycling firms, the commercial sector, the Ministry of Environment (MoENV), and the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) to increase recycling through the following three objectives:

  1. expand and improve private sector-led recycling services.
  2. increase demand for and utilization of recycling services within the Amman commercial sector; and
  3. increase local and national government support for improved solid waste management.

The Recycling in Jordan activity will increase the competitiveness of recycling and invigorate the circular economy using a market-based approach, strengthening market linkages, and improving the enabling environment. As the recycling sector becomes more competitive, the activity will support it to capitalize on opportunities to boost commercial sector use of recycling services.

  1. PRINCIPAL POSITION OBJECTIVES, BASIC FUNCTIONS/CRITICAL TASK

The Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting the Senior Communications Specialist in overseeing USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity’s strategic communications and outreach activities. The Communications Specialist will support in the design of USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity’s strategic communications plan and will assist in coordinating with counterparts and stakeholders all communications and awareness raising activities including social media outlets to ensure that JRA is raising awareness of the Activity’s outcomes and results with target audiences. In general, the Communications Specialist will support the following areas:

  1. Effective communication with relevant stakeholders and the general public to amplify the impact of USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity interventions,
  2. Program reporting to USAID. This includes preparing program success stories to promote USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity’s impact as well as capturing compelling narratives.
  3. Preparation of USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity’s reporting requirements to USAID, including preparation of quarterly and annual reports.
  4. Support the design and implementation of USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity’s social behavioral change and communications strategy and actions plans to target the commercial sector.

All strategic communication and outreach activities should follow the USAID-approved branding and communications guidelines. The Communications Specialist will integrate gender and social inclusion principles into communications material when applicable.

  1. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the Communications Manager and other stakeholders to implement the JRA communications and outreach plan.
  • Review and edit written submissions from the team to eliminate language errors and present sequential narrative.
  • Support the preparation of all reporting material under USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity, including quarterly and annual reports, ensuring compliance with USAID guidelines and templates. Task will include proofreading, editing and paraphrasing narrative.
  • Assist in organizing public events such as launch events, conferences, exhibitions, press conferences, and training events under the supervision and support of the Communications Manager and with assistance from the Activity operations and technical team.
  • Contribute to developing press releases, newsletters, weekly highlights and success stories, and oversee media monitoring for JRA-supported events and activities.
  • An eye for Integration of gender and social inclusion points in all USAID Recycling in Jordan Activity’s communication materials as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Communications Manager.
  1. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, Public Relations, Journalism, Media Studies, International Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years working in a communications role in donor-funded programs, preferably USAID funded projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English with strong attention to detail, accuracy, and consistent quality.  Arabic is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work around the timelines and schedules of other team members.
  • Ability to proofread, summarize, edit, and paraphrase.

 

  1. LOCATION OF ASSIGNMENT

The Communications Specialist will be based in the project’s office in Wadi Saqra, Amman, Jordan.
