INSO is looking for a GIS Assistant

INSO is an international non-governmental, non-profit organisation. Our mission is to support the humanitarian community with information, analysis, and advice that enhances situational awareness, supports informed decision-making, strengthens operational practice, and enables humanitarian access.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the INSO Information Manager and GIS Officer, the successful candidate will focus on meeting INSO's mapping and spatial analysis needs and supporting the information management unit with IT support and related tasks.

The GIS Assistant position is a rewarding role. It offers a unique opportunity to work with a team and provide support in providing safety and security services to the NGO community. The successful candidate must have professional proficiency in Arabic and English (reading, writing, and speaking).

Key Duties

  • Identify map needs in collaboration with the Information and Programme teams.
  • Identify and access map information sources.
  • Ensure accurate linkages between spatial databases and INSO data.
  • Produce and maintain high-quality, security-relevant static and web maps, including security incident mapping, area of influence mapping, reference maps, and other data visualizations.
  • Ensures that the produced maps meet the requirements of INSO and partners.
  • Support in designing data collection tools, geospatial analysis, and drafting of maps.
  • Work closely with the GIS Officer to ensure accurate and regularly updated linkages between GIS maps and INSO’s Incident Database.
  • Support the information management unit in managing INSO’s incidents database and delivering tasks related to information management.
  • Understand the ongoing events and the security environment of Syria.

Internal Communication Processes

The GIS Assistant will work directly with the GIS Officer in the country and liaise with the Information manager to guarantee a quality product that suits the needs of the programme team. He/she will respond to information requests from the programme team and keep the GIS Officer informed of the GIS activities in the mission.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in GIS or a related discipline (Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Engineering.
  • 1 - 2 years of experience in GIS, preferably in the humanitarian context, with demonstrable experience in high-quality map production.
  • Excellent command of ArcGIS Pro and QGIS software.
  • Previous experience with spatial mobile data collection (Maps. me, Google Maps).
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite, mainly Illustrator and InDesign.
  • Excellent in Microsoft Excel and knowledge of operating Microsoft 365
  • Fluency in English and Arabic language, both written and verbal.
  • Understanding and working experience in the Syrian context is desired.
  • Prior knowledge of the region is an asset.
