Position: Legal Assistant  

Job site: Jordan (roving in seven governorates: Amman, Madaba, Mafraq, Irbid, Karak, Tafileh, Ma’an)

Reports to: (Hierarchical and Technical) Protection Coordinator.

Status: Fulltime.

Purpose/objective of the position:

The “Legal Assistant” is responsible for supporting the Protection Coordinator in providing legal information, counseling, and assistance to vulnerable persons and referring them for representation in accordance with INTERSOS’ mandate, priorities, and donor agreements. The Assistant also assists the Protection Coordinator in planning and conducting awareness-raising sessions on legal issues and legislation pertaining to civilians’ protection.

Generic Duties:

  • Support legal services provider, as needed, in conducting intake interviews with beneficiaries in order to assess legal needs and provide legal counseling on the main issues identified.
  • Prepare cash requests and other related documentation for financial assistance of legal services, including payment of cash. Ensure that invoices and supporting documents are handed over to the designated department (e.g., admin and finance).
  • Develop quality material for dissemination of legal information through outreach activities.
  • Provide legal information to clients on the main legal issues identified
  • Bring to immediate attention any case of special/emergency needs to Protection Coordinator and legal services provider
  • Carry out all tasks respecting key protection principles, including but not limited to: do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality, accountability, and need-to-know principles
  • Document cases under his/her responsibility on the internal legal databases and ensure that any progress on action plan and any significant change in the client’s overall situation is timely and duly recorded
  • Ensure proper and safe filing and archiving of legal cases files, maintaining data confidentiality
  • Prepare regular reports on legal services provided and submit it to the Protection Coordinator and legal services provider for revision and approval
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate awareness legal sessions in the area of operation according to identified needs

Specific Duties:

  • Assist the Protection Coordinator in capacity-building activities with INTERSOS staff, local CBOs, and community members
  • Ensure non-partisan, culturally, and socially to advise the team in the appropriate implementation of the project;
  • Contribute to feasibility studies, surveys, and need assessments;
  • Establish new contacts with communities as well as revive old ones where INTERSOS has been working;
  • Conduct community committees’ trainings, field visits, campaigns, meetings with local leaders and women’s groups;
  • Seek to create constructive working environment for community participants and field team, and encourage, facilitate, and mediate nonviolent conflict resolution and problem solving.
  • S/he will perform any other tasks requested by the Supervisor in the framework of the activities foreseen by INTERSOS program in Jordan.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the INTERSOS Code of Conduct and policies;
  • Strictly follow the internal procedures, policies (PSEA, CPP etc.) and guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Law;
  • Minimum one year of relevant professional experience
  • Good knowledge of the local legal system and legal procedures
  • Strong knowledge of international protection and human rights legal standards
  • Extensive field experience and an in-depth knowledge of refugee’s assistance issues;
  • Proven experience in dealing with community members, local leaders, and other stakeholders;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage efficiently multiple priorities, deadlines, and tasks with attention to detail;
  • Experience in conducting research, assessments, and interviews is a strong asset;

  • Native Arabic -Good written and spoken English
  • Strong team spirit, comfortable in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent analytical skills, observation and analysis capacity, and reporting skills.
