About the role:
The GIS Developer will play a leading role in the development, deployment and maintenance of GIS applications and geospatial capabilities throughout MAG's global programmes and departments. The GIS developer will contribute to ensure high levels of safety, quality, innovation and continual improvement in MAG’s operational implementation, and to promote the sharing of expertise, learning and development inside MAG and within the mine action sector as a whole.
Job Description:
- Develop GIS applications focused on ESRI ArcGIS online, ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Pro, to extend MAG’s geospatial capabilities and increase interoperability with wider MAG IT systems.
- Develop desktop and server-side geospatial custom tools and functionalities utilising ESRI python APIs.
- Develop and extend web mapping applications using ESRI COTS tools and ESRI Javascript APIs.
- Contribute to the design and improvement of the GIS platform, including system architecture, database structure, server configuration, and user interface, with consideration for scalability and performance.
- Contribute to design, development and implementation of spatial databases.
- Develop and enhance MAG’s field based data collection and reporting capabilities, with focus on automation
- Conduct thorough testing of the GIS system to identify and resolve bugs and perform quality assurance to ensure data quality and system reliability.
- Document code, configurations, and system architecture.
- Develop technical components of operational user guides and standard operating procedures.
- Provide advanced (SME level) technical support for MAG’s geospatial capabilities deployed across global programmes.
- Work alongside MAG central IT teams to integrate geospatial capabilities into MAG services
- Work with the Deputy Head of Programmes Information Management to continually develop information management strategies that improve the efficiency of MAG operations regionally and globally, including the research and development of innovative IM technologies, methodologies and systems.
- Attend and/or participate in the organisation and delivery of international and external meetings and workshops
Essential Experience
- Advanced Python applications development
- ESRI application development APIs, including ArcPy and ArcGIS API for Python
- Recent in-depth experience developing geospatial solutions on ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal, Server) or ArcGIS online
- Management of data access and user security within ESRI Enterprise or ArcGIS online environments.
- Development of GIS analytical tools and automation, as ArcGIS Pro toolboxes or geoprocessing services
- MS-Office applications.
Desirable Experience
- Web development using JavaScript and JavaScript frameworks
- Web mapping development utilising ESRI JavaScript API version 3 or 4
- Microsoft Azure/Amazon AWS cloud-based infrastructure/service development and administration.
- Microsoft Azure PostgreSQL or SQL database development and administration.
- Spatial database design, development and management.
- Development of spatial data ETL processes and technologies utilising FME or python libraries
- Big data and machine learning technologies and approaches.
- Microsoft Power Apps, Power Automate and Power BI.

Essential Skills and Knowledge
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Proficiency in producing high quality technical documentation.
- An efficient self-starter with an ability to work alone and as part of a team, prioritise tasks, and deliver against deadlines.
- Good project management and organisational skills including ability to plan think strategically and make sound decisions.
