MHPSS and Child Protection Specialist

ROLE PURPOSE:

The MHPSS and Child Protection Specialist as part of Program Development and Quality Team will provide technical guidance, support and strategic direction to the Child Protection in Emergencies works currently being implemented by Jordan Country programmes.

The role of the Child Protection Specialist is to assess, design and guide staff as they initiate and implement child protection interventions, including   case management and interventions that address violations of children’s rights: protect them from abuse, exploitation, violence and neglect. The Specialist is responsible for ensuring that quality programs meet quality standards and capacities of staff are developed to provide protection to children.

 

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Camps and Child Protection Advisor

Country Dimensions: Save the Children works in all 12 Governorates in Jordan with a current staff complement of approximately 300 staff and current expenditure of approximately $10 million each year

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Support the delivery of effective Programmes, in both development and humanitarian contexts, by:

  • Provide technical support to the field teams through regular field visits to ensure child protection activities are appropriately implemented according to quality standards.
  • Support the ongoing referral systems amongst the different program interventions (child protection, education, psychosocial, income generation, food security, etc.).
  • Support other sector teams (i.e., food, education, livelihood) in mainstreaming child protection as a cross thematic area.
  • Carry out trainings and orientation for staff on: Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) and child participation; psychosocial support; and, provide ongoing support and mentoring to staff as they implement.
  • Ensure that community-based Child Protection Committees (CbCPC) are established and strengthened by: ensuring CPCs set and follow their action plans; linking CPCs with other existing committees; and, identify areas of needed training and support for CPC members.
  • Support in ensuring the active participation of children in Children’s Committees by exploring different initiatives, resources and practices to promote meaningful child participation.
  • Compile quantitative and qualitative updated data and reports as needed in collaboration with MEAL team.
  • In coordination with the Child Protection team members, support regular participatory activities with different groups of children to identify issues affecting children in their communities, and assist the teams to identify gaps and develop appropriate responses accordingly.
  • Ad hoc translation of CP resources, like brochures, fact sheets from English to Arabic.
  • Ensure the representation of Save the Children international as CP and right-based organization in Inter-Agency coordination meetings when needed.
  • Ensures adherence to the Child Safeguarding Policy and reporting procedures
  • Undertakes any other tasks assigned by line manager/supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • University degree in, Social Work, psychological, social sciences or any relevant area
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the field of child protection.
  • Commitment to and understanding of child rights, Save the Children’s aims, values and principles and humanitarian standards as Sphere Charter and Code of Conduct.
  • Experience in capacity building and in strengthening various duty bearers understanding of and response to child protection.
  • Self-awareness and proven ability to operate successfully in different cultural environments.
  • Ability to achieve results and maintain consistent high standards of professional behaviour and achievement, including when working alone.
  • Good interpersonal and team building skills
  • Ability to communicate and maintain appropriate and productive relations with a range of actors, including children, parents, local and national authorities in political and militarily sensitive environments.
  • Experience of working with partners and a participatory approach
  • Ability to multitask, manage stress, flexible and accommodating in difficult and frustrating working circumstance.
  • Good Command of Computer Skills.
  • Very Good Arabic and English writing and communication skills.
