Job Summary:
The nutrition officer will work alongside the senior nutrition officer to ensure that Nutrition Program (SBCC program) operate effectively and efficiently to deliver optimal quality care to pregnant and breastfeeding women and caregivers of infants and children following up within the nutrition program, girls and boys under the age of 2 years.
The nutrition officer will report to the senior nutrition officer (SNO) to accomplish the following tasks:
- Overall responsibility for the day-to-day administration of SBCC project activities.
- Screen PBW and children to identify targeted beneficiaries for the MIYCN support group activities based on identified selection criteria that ensures the intervention prioritizes most vulnerable groups.
- Assess the knowledge of the caregivers before and after counselling sessions and MIYCN support group sessions.
- Review the forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence
- Facilitate the development and scheduling of outreach activities (e.g. for MIYCN Outreach Workers/volunteers);
- Facilitate and support scheduling of MIYCN mother/caregiver support group sessions.
- Arrange and coordinate for planned events with the team and other partners.
- Arrange and conduct cooking demonstration sessions for the beneficiaries in collaboration with nutrition volunteers, MIYCN support groups, and mother champions.
- Closely monitor the project plan and progress with the team to ensure all targets are met by the end of the project.
- Ensure a comfortable, calm, environment for counseling sessions and MIYCN support group sessions and maintain good relationships with the beneficiaries
- Contribute to monitoring of the MIYCN and SBCC activities, MIYCN support group sessions, counselling sessions.
- Coordinate the daily work schedule with the nutrition counselors, arranging transportation plan for the team to identified shelters for the MIYCN support group sessions.
- Review and update the SBCC datasets on Kobo and /or ONA and filter the data to ensure accurate records of the SBCC activities and the beneficiaries.
- Raise procurement requisitions, in coordination with admin officers and procurement team to ensure the program supplies are received timely.
- Track the inventory of program supplies and ensure accurate and timely records maintained all the time.
- Review and follow up with the team on the distribution lists, compile and upload them in a timely manner to SharePoint.
- Ensure all records are reflected timely and accurately on PIMS and review them in a timely manner.
- Ensure timely tracking of program materials and storekeeping activities for SBCC program supplies, and systematically review the alignment of inventory on PIMS with the physical stock.
- Facilitate cross-sectoral programming, particularly to promote excellent communication and referral between MIYCN, IMAM, and SBCC programming.
- Ensure that all staff understand and implement MIYCN program guidelines when assessing the mother-child pair and advise the best feeding options and follow-up as appropriate.
- Maintain good connection with reproductive healthcare providers, protection, mental health, disability support and WASH routes in the camp to support potential crosscutting needs.
- Maintain proper communication with caregivers.
- To support medical nutrition therapy to children and PBW of chronic conditions whenever needed
- Support in Assessing infants for infant danger signs, growth, and feeding; especially infants nutritionally at risk, to be closely followed up and ensure timely referral at any time a sign of risk is identified,
- Ensure appropriate and consistent education messaging to mothers and other carers at all programming contact points and in the community.
- Conduct interactive support group sessions and one-to-one counselling sessions to mothers and caregivers of children 0-2 years on key MIYCN to improve maternal, infant and young child nutrition and feeding practices at their shelters (shelter visits)
- Follow-up with mothers and caregivers after the support group or individual sessions, and assess improvements on knowledge, attitudes, and practices, of key dietary behaviors and feeding practices.
- Conduct interactive support group sessions to mothers and caregivers and influential family members on maternal, infant and young child feeding behaviors and practices to support in improving maternal, infant and young child nutrition.
- Provide tailored one-on-one counseling sessions to caregivers of children 0-2 years, in line with needs discovered in initial screenings and assessments, offering practical advice and education on key nutritional issues.
- Identify children and PBW at higher risk of poor nutrition and new or inexperience mothers for more intensive counselling support.
- Arrange for interactive MIYCN support group sessions activities: time, shelter address, supplies, materials, supporting aids, handouts, and invitations, in coordination and with gaining consent from the hosting caregiver/caregivers.
- Ensure all mothers/caregivers are aware of the importance of the early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.
- Educate the mothers/caregivers on the quality, consistency, quantity, and frequency of meals to promote adequate weight gain during child development and meet their children’s daily nutritional requirements.
- Educate caregivers on food safety and hygiene.
- Educate caregivers on responsive feeding practices.
- Conduct effective focus groups discussions when required and ensure good documentation and reporting of qualitative data.
- Discourage unhealthy eating habits: consumption of tea, coffee, instant noodles. Etc.
- Coordinate the concept testing and pre-testing of all communication materials that are developed.
- Provide pregnant women with preparatory counseling for breastfeeding and colostrum feeding, to prevent pre-lacteal feeds and bottle feeding;
- Educate the mothers on correct maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation;
- Screen PBW and children for malnutrition and anemia and refer identified cases for IMAM program and health services.
- Ensure systematic screening for acute malnutrition among pregnant and lactating women, and children 6-59 months.
- Ensure that all malnourished PBW and children are referred appropriately for nutrition support to (SFP/OTP)
- Link with referral routes in the camp to facilitate PBW referral to receive ANC and PNC services
- Through liaison with the nutrition volunteers, provide effective follow up of all defaulter cases – particularly:
- Ensure the prompt tracing of mothers and caregivers who are absent from the sessions.
- Train the volunteer on and ensure good data collection practices.
- Proactively identify potential challenges and implement mitigation measures promptly.
Reporting and Advocacy:
- Maintain daily records of children, caregivers, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and key influencers attending MIYCN support group sessions and/ or counselling sessions to be reflected on the system to MEAL on daily basis.
- Ensure systematic disaggregated age/gender data for children and PBW’s (pregnant, lactating) are recorded correctly and timely reported using standard program reporting tool.
- Submit comprehensive periodic, and ad hoc relevant statistical reports and data required by the senior nutrition officer and MEAL in a timely manner.
- Submit weekly and monthly reporting of activities to the senior nutrition officer and MEAL in a timely manner, and support in compiling the data from the nutrition counselors and volunteers and submitting the monthly report.
- Compile, review and filter weekly sheets from nutrition volunteers and nutrition counselors and report on weekly basis to the senior nutrition officer on the progress.
- Play an active role in advocacy to promote proper MIYCN Practices, antenatal and post-natal checkups, importance of institutional deliveries, vaccination, and growth monitoring.
- Support in the documentation of project case studies, lessons learnt, beneficiary stories, advocacy campaigns and project reporting.
Referral and Coordination:
- Maintain strong coordination with the nutrition team working in the nutrition clinics and in the field, and the medical staff to support medical nutrition therapy for chronic conditions if needed.
- Refer children and/or PBWs for intensive nutritional/medical care as required.
- Ensure caregivers are aware of available services and advocate prioritization for caregivers, where necessary, in appropriate services and support
- Refer all pregnant women to the next antenatal care services if not already informed.
- Refer cases for community follow – ups to community nutrition volunteers in coordination with the nutrition focal point at the nutrition clinics.
- Refer to other services in the camp (Health, Nutrition, Reproductive health, Mental Health, Disabilities, Protection and WASH);
- Coordinate with all health practitioners, nutrition officers and trainers, nutrition counselors, nutrition volunteers in relevant clinic/location to ensure that all pregnant and lactating mothers are referred to IMAM/MIYCN services.
- Receive cases referred from the nutrition colleagues, reproductive health, community health and other actors in the camp and manage cases appropriately.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum a BSc degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related fields
- Minimum experience of two years total experience with up to one year experience in clinical nutrition\nutritionist of nutrition or nutrition counselling.
- Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach staff; supervisory experience of staff or volunteers.
- Very Good command of spoken and written English
- Highly organized and has excellent time-management skills.
- Good computing skills in Kobo, Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Able to integrate into a multi-cultural team and cooperate with co-workers.
Desirable:
- Knowledge and proven experience in nutrition-sensitive social and behavior change communication.
- Experienced nutritionist with proven experience in carrying out SBCC and close engagement and communication with communities.
- Proven experience in MIYCN programming.
- Proven experience working in Syrian refugee camps.
- Proven experience in nutrition counseling of pregnant and breastfeeding women on maternal nutrition, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN)
- Experience working in humanitarian emergency settings.
- Proven capacity of conducting shelter visits, individual sessions and MIYCN support group sessions, at caregivers shelters of 100% of the SBCC project intervention
