Mercy Corps is a non-profit, voluntary humanitarian aid agency, registered in the United States and Scotland with offices in more than 40 countries around the world. Mercy Corps has been addressing the humanitarian needs in Jordan through a diverse portfolio of development and relief programs for the past 12 years. Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive, and just communities. Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war almost five years ago, Mercy Corps has worked to address the urgent needs of nearly 4 million people both inside Syria and in neighboring countries.

 

General Position Summary:

Working in Finance Department under a direct supervision of Finance Coordinator, the Intern will assist Finance unit with checking accuracy and completeness of Mercy Corps accounting records, preparing various financial reconciliations, supporting with month end processes as well as managing daily routine tasks.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Support the payment processing team (Finance Assistant and/or Finance Officer) to ensure all payments are cleared on a timely fashion.
  2. Data entry to MC Accounting System (Navigator)
  3. Assist with various reconciliations such as Bank, Cash, advances, receivables, payables, etc.  
  4. Assist with month-end financial reports and journal entries
  5. Assist with daily treasury Operations
  6. Maintain a soft and hard filing system in accordance with Mercy Corps Policies and Procedures.
  7. Provide support to other team members
  8. Assist during the audit processes.
  9. Other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

 

Learning Objectives:   

Through the internship, the intern will acquire:

  • Learning experiences that combine in-class theory with real-world applications
  • Ability to work effectively with other team member

 

Deliverables:

The intern is expected to provide support to the team in terms of:

  • Entering cash and bank transaction into Navigator.
  • Maintain a proper filing system of all financial records.

                                                                                                  

Living Conditions: 

Jordan is a Middle Eastern country with insufficient supplies of water, oil and other natural resources. Other challenges include budget deficit, poverty and unemployment. Amman, like any other city, is divided between the higher income population (west of Amman) where English is widely spoken, and the lower income population (East of Amman). Islam is if the official religion of the Kingdom, around 92% of the population is Muslim. People of Jordan are conservative; therefore, decent clothing is essential especially in parts other than West of Amman. 

Mercy Corps interns and volunteers represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
