GENERAL FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning Manager, the Senior Research Officer for the “USAID Strengthening Civil Society and Media Systems (Sawt) Activity” will support the Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning (MERL) Team by: supporting the design and implementation of targeted research activities; conducting both qualitative and quantitative research; collecting, verifying, analyzing, and reporting on project-related data; and contributing to project reporting efforts that capture the activities, impacts, and successes of the Sawt Activity.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES are listed below; other duties may be assigned.
Research
- Undertake field-monitoring missions to assess progress of the project implementation using Internews’ standard monitoring and evaluation tools and methodologies.
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative desk research as well as field monitoring and verification of project implementation.
- Support the Sawt MERL Manager in designing and implementing MERL-related research initiatives, with a particular focus on impact measurement and assessment activities.
- Perform partner and/or audience research, as requested – support the deployment of Sawt-led informative and evaluative surveys targeting project partners and/or local audiences; support media and civil society partners to undertake their own small-scale audience / community research via existing digital platforms.
- Conduct relevant field trips to partners’ locations/offices and arrange meetings to gather key information and details pertaining to relevant research.
Reporting
- Provide input to all project reporting though supporting data collection and verification activities, analysing findings, reviewing reports, and providing recommendations.
- Engage in partner (beneficiary) media and civil society narrative reporting and/or capacity-building activities, as requested by Sawt MERL Manager.
Impact & Learning
- Work closely with the Communications Team and provide insights from research findings that contribute to documenting relevant success stories.
- Contribute to the organization’s knowledge management by documenting lessons learned and best practices derived from research findings.
- Provide support in the design and facilitation of learning activities to ensure that the findings are fully utilized to provide meaningful insights on effective program design and delivery.
- Play a key role in communicating the program’s achievements to relevant parties.
- Identify and deliver key stories of impact utilizing different research approaches.
Other
- Any other related duties assigned by the supervisor to ensure program success.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Required
- Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills, and experience in designing and managing mixed methods research, including sampling methodologies, survey design, data collection, and analysis, to support effective project implementation.
- Experience in planning, coordinating, and implementing research and analysis with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience in undertaking or managing fieldwork and adapting methods to challenging and resource-constrained conditions.
- Strong presentation skills and experience in adapting oral and written research outputs to present in non-technical language to diverse audiences from grassroots to senior levels, including INGO staff, civil society, media, government representatives, and/or donors.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage appropriately with audiences, journalists, local researchers, contractors, senior project staff, and donors.
- Track record of delivering research findings on time, on budget, and to a high standard.
- At least 5 years of experience in the design and implementation of research and M&E activities implemented by local, national, and/or international organizations.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
- Fluency in written and spoken Arabic is required.
- Ability and permission to work and reside in Jordan without Internews sponsorship.
